History and Background on the 12 Months of the Year

January is the first month of the year. It was originally called Januarius in Old English. It’s a translation of Latin. Named after the god Janus, meaning god of beginnings. In the Roman Calendar, this month did not exist.

February is month two. It was called Februarius, named after Februa, the purification festival. In the Roman Calendar, this month did not exist. This month is important because it has 28 days when normal months have 30 or 31 days.

March, called Martius, is named after the god Mars. He was the god of war. Spring occurs in this month near the end. The birth flower of this month is the Daffodil.

April, called Aprilis, named either after the goddess Aphrodite or the Latin word aperire, to open. This month is part of Spring. This month’s birth flower is the Daisy or Sweet Pea.

May, called Maius, probably named after the goddess Maia. Emerald is this month’s birthstone, so if your born in May, the Emerald is for you. The Emerald symbolizes love and success.

June, originally named Junius, probably named after the goddess Juno, was originally the 4th month in the Roman calendar. Rose and Honeysuckle are the flowers for this month along with the Pearl that is the months birthstone.

July, Julius, named after Julius Caesar in 44 B.C.E. Prior to that time its name was Quintilis from the word quintus, fifth, because it was the 5th month in the old Roman calendar. The ruby, as the birthstone, represents contentment.

August, Augustus, named after emperor Augustus in 8 B.C.E. Prior to that time the name was Sextilis from the word sextus, sixth, because it was the 6th month in the old Roman calendar.

September, from the word septem, seven, because it was the 7th month in the old Roman calendar. The second world war was actually in the month of September, and the Queen of Elizabeth the first was born.

October, from the word octo, eight, because it was the 8th month in the old Roman calendar. Opal is a gem that represents this month. Cosmos is a beautiful flower that is owned to this month.

November, from the word novem, nine, because it was the 9th month in the old Roman calendar. This month’s birthstone is a Topaz and the birth flower is a Chrysanthemum.

December, from the word decem, ten, because it was the 10th month in the old Roman calendar. Zircon is this month’s lovely gem. Narcissus is the flower that represents this month which is also the last month of the year. These are all 12 months that are in every year.
