The Lookingglass Gym

When Will the Building be Rebuilt?

One December 27, 2016 the Lookingglass Gym caught fire and burnt to the ground. The fire burnt the library, gym and cafeteria, which were all housed in the same building. The fire left the students without a place for indoor sports or a nice gym for P.E. The students also would go into the library to read, play board games, or just talk to the librarian, but since the building burnt down they can’t do that. The school however made a new library in the main building and the kids can now go in it on Tuesdays and Thursdays during recess.

People didn’t originally know if the gym was going to be rebuilt and they wouldn’t truly know until the school board said that the gym would be rebuilt. On May 8, 2017 the school board agreed to having the gym be rebuilt in the same place the old one had. Now the only question was, when will it be built?

The school board’s idea is to have the gym be rebuilt in June of 2018. They have made drawings of what the outside and inside of the gym will look like on their page, www.wdsd.org/LES .

What Should we be Expecting?

The original gym was an amazing building built back in the 1800’s. The gym’s wood floors made playing games inside of the gym easier than playing games on the tile floors at Brockway. The wood floors were also used for skating. So, what kind of floors will it have? Well, the kind of flooring the gym will have is wood. The gym will have a basketball court, stage, and bleachers.

The new build will also have a new cafeteria and kitchen. Which means the students won’t have to use the modular anymore and then cooks will. have a real kitchen to use.
The new building will not be the same as the old one. Other people, and myself, have just made to many great memories in that building and it cannot be truly replaced. Although, it will be great to have a place for the annual Lookingglass plays on campus again. I can’t wait to see what the new building will look like when it’s completed and to see how many memories are going to be made there.
