Divergent Book Review

Owen Shapro, Staff Writer

Divergent was the debut novel of American novelist Veronica Roth. It was released April 25th, 2011. The book takes place in a dystopian future where the world has split up into 5 “Factions”, Dauntless, Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, and Candor. Each one with its own special qualifications. In this world once you turn 16 a certain day of the year will be “Choosing Day”. This is the day in which you either leave the faction you were born in for one of the other four or stay with your family. Before you choose your faction, you must perform an aptitude test which will tell you which faction you’re best suited for. You don’t have to listen to it, of course. But, sometimes, the computer will decide that you don’t fit in any and that’s called being Divergent.

The story follows a young girl who scored Divergent on the aptitude test, named Beatrice. She is fresh out of Abnegation and has moved into Dauntless. Though she has been scoring high on the initiation tests, she’s been warned to stay low because being a Divergent could get you killed. It is dangerous.

The book is alright, the action doesn’t really start until towards the end of the book which I’m fine with, but I’m more upset at the fact that it’s more of a love story between her and her Dauntless instructor, Four. There is a movie adaptation of the book and the next two in the Divergent trilogy. The fourth book has not received a movie yet.
