Sea Turtles

Did you know the most ancient animals are the Sea turtle? Well now you do. They’re unique because they can’t put their heads and legs inside their shells unlike other turtles. Sea turtles eat jellyfish, seaweed, crab, shrimp, snails, algae, and mollusks. The population is very hard and difficult to track because once the babies hatch and touch the ocean they never seem to come back to the shore, but another thing we do know is they live in the warm water throughout the ocean.

The smallest sea turtle is the Kemp’s Ridley they’re only 30 inches and weigh between 80-100 pounds. The largest sea turtle is the Leatherback and they are 6 and a half feet and can weigh over 2,000 pounds, but both of them have a lifespan of 80 years. Sea turtles were first found 180 million years ago.

When a female sea turtle is about to lay their eggs they go back to the nesting grounds they were hatched and can end up hatching 150 eggs every two to three weeks. They also travel 10,000 miles every year. Sea turtles can stay underwater for up to five hours, but their feeding dives usually only last five minutes or less. This is why we need to keep Sea turtles alive.
