Resident Evil 7

The survival horror game Resident Evil 7, unlike the predecessors of it, focuses much more on sneaking around and survival, more than killing everything in sight. Also unlike previous games in the series, it is in first person, the others are all in third. In the game you play as Ethan Winters, who is simply a civilian and brings nothing to this game combat-wise or even much as a character. All he brings is the easiest way for someone to get lured into the murder house, that is the Baker Manor. Inside the Manor is his wife. A wife who had disappeared from existence 3 years ago until Ethan received a mysterious video message from her telling him to stay away. He managed to track down where the video came from, and it dragged him into Dulvey, Louisiana where said Manor is located.

The game play is smooth and responsive, and provides you with enough of a fear factor to leave you unsettled at the least, especially if played at night. The only real complaints I REALLY have is the peripherals of the game are all messed up. Because of the first person view, it always appears that there is a flashlight on your head providing light, so the game focuses on where the light is leaving you feeling trapped in a small room almost constantly.

As stated before, the game is unlike previous games because of the first person view and the main focus of sneaking. And though the game does focus on stealth and conserving ammo, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any boss fights where you have to go in guns a’blazin’.

Speaking of boss fights, there are 5 major ones in total. One for each mutated member of the Baker family. Jack (The father) whom you must fight for 3 of the 5 boss fights is easily the toughest family member. Marguerite (The Mother) probably has the most annoying and scary boss fight which involves her controlling the mutated bugs of the swamp and having them attack you whilst transforming into some kind of spider creature and scaling the walls. And finally, Eveline (The youngest daughter) is the final boss. Though that isn’t the entire Baker family. Lucas, is the deranged son who would rather his family stay mutated than you save them. And Zoe, the daughter who helped you get the cure throughout the whole game.

Overall, I enjoyed the game from start to finish. I was glad that they refrained from cheap jump scares and focused more on an overall scary and creepy atmosphere with characters that left you questioning how much more evil they could get.
